5 Things To Look For In A Display Home

5 things to look for when walking through a display home
Thinking of building with Montgomery Homes, but don’t know where to start? The very first step is visiting one of our beautiful display homes! Dotted across Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast, our display homes are free to tour any time, so you can get a vibe for the space and determine whether the design is right for you and your family.
But how do you know if a home design is right for you?
In this article, we share five things to look for when walking through a display home to help decide whether it’s right for you.
#1. The floor plan
One of the most important elements to focus on while visiting a display home is the floor plan. You need to ensure your new home is functional and ideally designed for your family’s unique needs.
Here are a few tips for analysing the floor plan.
- Check the size of the rooms — While you’re visiting, take a few measurements and make sure your furniture can fit there. There’s nothing worse than moving into a new home and discovering you can’t fit everything in!
- Check the number of bedrooms and bathrooms — Take note of how many bedrooms and bathrooms are on the floor plan. Can everyone in your family have their own room? Will you have spare bedrooms available for visitors and storage? Is there a spare bathroom available?
- Check the size of the doorways and halls — You want a home that’s disability friendly with wide doorways and hallways. The halls shouldn’t have sharp turns and should be manageable for everyone.
One of our team members will be on hand with brochures, including an illustration of the floor plan. You can take this brochure home to consider whether the floor plan suits your needs.
#2. Quality of doors, windows and cabinetry
Many people forget to check the quality of doors, windows, drawers and other cabinetry while visiting a display home. We recommend opening and closing things as you make your way around the display — do they open and close smoothly, or do they get stuck? Do doors scrape along the floor?
Our home designs come with premium doors, windows and cabinetry as a standard, including durable 2-Pack Polyurethane and Polytec Melamine cabinet materials that will never chip, peel or fade in the sunlight. Download our inclusions brochure to find out more!
#3. Tiling, wallpaper and paintwork
While walking through our display homes, take note of the tiling, wallpaper and the quality of the paintwork. We source our tiles, paint and designer wallpaper from premium suppliers in the local area, and the good news is that you have the freedom to choose what colours, patterns and textures are included in your new home.
If you decide to build with us, you will be invited to our Selections Gallery in either Sydney or Newcastle, where our Interior Designer will guide you through internal and external colours, bathroom items, roofing, appliances, doors and door hardware. You’re in charge of how your new home looks and feels!
#4. The storage space
Whether you’re upsizing or downsizing, you’ll still need lots of storage space! Make sure there’s ample storage in the design you’re contemplating calling home — walk-in wardrobes and spacious cupboards are a good place to start in the bedroom, and a butler’s pantry is ideal in the kitchen. Here, you can store Tupperware, tableware, appliances and dry goods to keep the kitchen looking spick and span.
You might also keep an eye out for a mudroom where you can leave shoes, bags and coats when you get home, especially on those rainy days.
#5. The placement of windows
Take note of where the windows are placed throughout the display home and think about the land you’re planning to build on. Will you have neighbours close by? Where are their windows placed? This is important for determining how much privacy you will have in your home and the need for additional curtains, blinds or shutters.
